Good Eats

Here is some lettuce that I’ve been munching on this week.

These treats are yummy. The recipe came from Better Homes and Gardens magazine. The only reason I made it was because of the strawberries. It wasn’t until I was spreading strawberry jam over peanut butter bars that I realized it was like a peanut buttter and jelly. After that I actually considered serving it for dinner!

I forgot to show you the great food that John’s cousins brought from their farm when they were here a few weeks ago. These awesome eggs from their hens. Oh man, these eggs are so good! We had like 2 dozen and they were gone in under a week.

They also brought a bunch of yummy asparagus too!

Happy Monday

The Planting of the Veggies

We had some friends help us with the gardens. They hauled all the manure and vermiculite for us in their truck. Then on the big day the whole fam came over to help with the planting. It was so much fun and we did it all just in time because the next day the gardens got a huge rain soaking.

We roped everything off by the square foot to give us a good idea of how everything will fit.

Then we just started laying things out to see how it would go.

Now everything is planted. Ready. Set. Grow!

Let’s see we have pole beans, bush beans, popcorn, 3 different peppers, a bunch of different tomatoes, snap peas, 2 different types of beets, carrots, radishes, 3 different types of lettuce, arugula, brussle sprouts, kale, cucumbers, and cilantro. Is that enough?

Now I will just be checking on it everyday to see if anything happens. Well, so far not much has. That’s how it goes, pretty soon I won’t be able to keep up with it.

The Moving of the Poop

Now that the boxes are in…

…we need to fill them with some poo.

You know there are some things that we do that makes me feel like we really are adults. Having a huge pile of manure/peat mix sit in our driveway for a couple of weeks has been one of those things.

Watching John drive this beast was a good one too.

This is after the first load all mixed in with the vermiculite.

Next installment -The planting of the veggies-

The Building of the Boxes

This weekend we finally got all of our materials needed to make our garden boxes. So we did it all from start to finish.

Here is the beginning of the boxes being built and all the helpers.

After the boxes were built the girls decided to play house in them.

Pretty quickly though, Harriet decided that was too far away and she moved in with Mary.

Guess Who

Guess who learned how to ride her bike this year?

Guess who almost always remembers to wear her helmet while on said bike?

Guess who loves, loves to climb trees and tells me all about the good climbing trees from Des Moines to Kickapoo?

Guess who loves to explore everything outdoors and especially in the woods?

Guess who loves to make jokes and be silly?

Guess who is the most patient girl with her little sister who copies her all day long?

Guess who learned how to read this year and hasn’t stopped ever since?

Guess who talks about swimming lessons every week even though they only last for 2 weeks out of the  year?

Guess who loves her kitty and loves to read books about taking care of cats?

Guess who gives big strong hugs that make me fall over?

Guess who just turned 6 this year?

Please

help me out. We are having problems at sewSpun with the commenting section. I have had several people let me know they can’t leave comments. We are trying to fix it and it should be up and going soon. In the mean time I am going to keep on this roll of actually posting. So, make sure and come back to see what’s going on.

no more

yard pictures for awhile. How about something crafty for once?

A few weeks ago I drove to a town in Wisconsin called Mineral Point. It’s an amazing old town full of artists. Of course I went on a Sunday in April so not very much was open, but I definitely plan on going back soon. I took a class at Shake Rag Alley to make an art scarf. What we did was dye a silk scarf and then felt wool on both sides of the silk.

The class was great, the people were great, the instructor was great, the campus was amazing. So, over all it was a good experience. I don’t however really like this scarf very much. I think it turned out fine and I liked making it but I guess I don’t really like the mix of silk and wool for this project. Next time I am going to just make an all wool scarf. Hopefully this week some time. It just takes a large chunk of time to do it so you have to make sure you can set that aside.

A week before

This is a set of Spring pictures that were all taken just a week before the ones from yesterday.

We have three Rhododendron shrubs in front of the house and after these bloom they are usually gone within the week. It’s so joyful how pretty they are and then poof, they are gone.

Aren’t they beautiful?

Here is where the baby bunnies lived for a couple of weeks. They were so sweet all huddled up together inside a pile of dried leaves. Just like the flowers, we woke up one day and they were gone.

If you look right in the middle of this photo you can see the woodpecker silhouette.

In the beginning

then a little bit bigger

Now, they are fully out of control.

This week of spring

Spring is such a time for change and where we live the change happens all the time and very fast. If you’re not watching you are sure to miss something.  Here are some changes going on in our yard right now.

Our clothes line in action

The splitting of the hostas

A nice row of bleeding hearts

Blueberries

Here is where we knocked down our shed over Easter weekend. We are trying to spruce things up a little to make a nice patio to hang out on.
